4 Newlywed Disaster Prep Ideas.
Before CoronaVirus, I didn’t really think of “disaster prep” until there was an inch of water flooding my basement office.
As a newlywed couple, when you read the phrase “disaster prep” you may envision bottled water, toilet paper, and boarded-up windows. Incidentally, this CoronaVirus has taught us that it’s a good idea to keep a few week’s supplies of food, water, medicine, etc. on hand in case of an emergency.
Also, it’s good to have a plan with your spouse, should this emergency happen when you are not together (rally point if phones are down, etc.).
Subsequently, your personal information is also a critical asset and should be part of your “disaster prep”. Here are four specific types of information you’ll need:
1. Personal Identification Records.
These records include your driver’s licenses, marriage license, birth certificate, passport, and social security card. Therefore, these documents will enable you to provide you and your spouse’s identity and help if you have to apply for disaster aid from F.E.M.A (Federal Emergency Management Agency).
2. Financial and Legal Documents
These records include financial accounts, insurance policies, and your will. Plus your ongoing financial obligations, such as your mortgage, car payment, credit cards, and any other outstanding loans. As a rule, you’re still responsible for these obligations after a disaster.
3. Medical Information
This includes the names and contact information for your doctors, copies of health insurance policies, and health ID cards. Remember to keep a copy of all your current prescriptions because such information could be crucial in the aftermath of a disaster.
4. Important Financial Contacts
There may be several different professional advisors you’ll want to contact as soon as possible following a catastrophic event. Therefore, you should have the contact information of your insurance agent, CPA, bank representative, and investment advisor, in a safe place.
It’s recommended that all this information be saved in a secure location like a safe or safety deposit box. Alternatively, some contact information should be stored on a password-protected mobile phone with a cloud storage server as a backup. Therefore, you’ll be able to access your information from anywhere.
