In the first place, when a couple gets engaged, insurance of any kind is probably not the first thing on the radar. However, when you consider the scope of the costs involved for the events, it becomes evident that it is a realistic endeavor.
Wedding Insurance
Wedding insurance is a type of special events insurance coverage. The coverage includes costs that result from cancellation, postponement, or liabilities related to the event. With this in mind, if you haven’t purchased the insurance, you may be able to protect your investment up to 24 hours before it starts.
When purchasing wedding insurance you can opt for two types – liability insurance and cancellation coverage.
Liability Insurance
Liability insurance protects issues out of your control including injuries, serving liquor, vendors, lost/stolen items, and damage to other’s property. Basically, liability insurance protects you from responsibility for any accidents or injuries during your ceremony or reception.
Also, most venues will require the liability insurance policy.
Cancellation Coverage
Cancellation coverage protects you when the event cannot be held on that day for reasons out of your control. However, don’t assume your policy covers everything.
Particularly concerning Covid-19 you should ask if it is included. Some insurers have decided to cover future pandemics but not this one. Covid-19 coverage is still evolving especially around policy language interpretation of biohazard and government shutdown.
Other Events
Coverage isn’t just for the wedding. You can design it to include events before and after the event and including deliverables associated with it. To clarify, when using the term cancellation, this does not include one by choice – the bride or groom backing out does not fit the description. Therefore, nearly all policies do not cover a change of heart – cold feet don’t count!
Also, a flight or a cruise cancellation or any disruption is a different cancellation policy than this discussion. The cost of one of these policies is not all the same, since what risks the consumer is choosing to include drives the price.
Furthermore, as the end of the pandemic nears and the insurer’s loss experience develops, more unforeseen expenses will arise. At the same time, government interventions or restrictions change from State to State therefore pricing will continue to be an unknown variable.
However, even with the latter caveats I don’t see the affordability outweighing the need.
Finally
If you’re already in the marketplace planning the event, then it makes economic sense to purchase coverage. Overall, special events insurance for your wedding will minimize your risk and recover some of the unforeseen last-minute expenses from a cancellation.
