Old School Wedding Traditions We Still Love by Carrie Willard.

Old school wedding traditions shouldn’t be kept for the sake of keeping them.

No wedding traditions are set in stone, and outdated traditions that don’t work for people shouldn’t be kept for the sake of keeping them. You don’t need an even number of guests, or to have the First Dance, for example – unless you want to, of course! But here are some wedding traditions you might want to keep.

Asking For Your Future In-laws’ Blessing

While it’s primarily a commitment between two people, marriage also brings two families together, and asking for their blessing is a courteous gesture (no matter who’s doing the asking) that shows you understand your lives are going to be joined. It’s not the same as asking for permission; while that is old school, it can be a little too much.

Sending Paper Invitations

Email invitations might be easier to send out, but people get hundreds of these a day – and they don’t have that personal, special touch that helps to add to the magic of your big day. Paper or card invitations add a human element to the proceedings, and they let your guests connect emotionally to your wedding. And with many companies now doing eco-friendly invitations they don’t have to be harmful or unsustainable, meaning your big day doesn’t have to harm the planet.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

This tradition isn’t just a lovely, quaint set of rhymes. They tend to be sentimental and symbolic gestures from those closest to the bride and groom, like parents, grandparents, siblings, or very close friends. Also, they typically involve little effort and minimal expense but allow your loved ones to be close to you and to take part in your big day.

8 QUESTIONS YOU MUST ASK A WEDDING PROFESSIONAL

The Gift Registry

You may find it strange, uncomfortable, or guilt-inducing to have a dedicated gift registry, but you needn’t feel any of those things! Your friends and family want to help you get the best start in your life together, so why wouldn’t you help them take the guesswork out of deciding which gifts would do exactly that?

Or maybe you don’t feel guilty or weird about it at all. It’s your big day, and maybe you feel just fine with a specific gift registry! Either way, this is the perfect opportunity to get that super powerful blender, bread-maker, or coffee machine you’ve always been eyeing up.

Writing Thank You Notes

Personally written thank you notes are perhaps the best way to show your appreciation to all of the people who helped make your special day a perfect and memorable one. And in a similar way to handwritten invitations, it helps guests emotionally connect to both you and the day.

Why wouldn’t you want to personally thank the in-laws who helped you make it all happen? Or to thank the friend who traveled halfway across the country just to be there on your big day?

Keep these traditions alive!
