11 Ways To Honor A Deceased Parent At Your Wedding

Here are 11 ways to honor a deceased parent at your wedding, so it’s classy and does not put the wedding guests in a depressing mood.

In the first place, it’s hard to lose a parent. Especially, at a wedding when their absence can seem even more noticeable since you’ve always pictured them as an integral part of your day.

8 QUESTIONS YOU MUST ASK A WEDDING PROFESSIONAL

Because it’s an important part on your wedding day, honoring and mentioning your parent will be touching, and surely memorable for your guests. Here are several meaningful options… choose one, or several:

The List

  • Save a chair upfront in the parent’s honor. If it’s the Fathers, place his favorite jacket and place his fishing pole (for example) next to the chair. If it’s the Mother then place a framed picture on that chair.
  • Make or design a beautiful bouquet charm with a picture of the parent, so they can still “walk with you” down the aisle!
  • Make a pit stop before the ceremony to the cemetery to drop off a parent’s boutonnière. Ask the photographer to capture that quiet moment before the ceremony.
  • Pick up shoe clips that allow you to put a parent’s picture in them so that they can still walk down the aisle with you.
  • Have a memory table. Set up a high-top table in the corner of the reception, with a personalized sign that says “Reserved for Mother of the Groom watching from heaven.”
  • If the parent had a favorite number, then frame that number and have a photo album of your favorite pictures of them placed on the table for your guests to look through and sign.
  • Play a song that was meaningful to you both.
  • Attach a small container with the ashes of the parent or a favorite tie or scarf onto the bouquet with a special message: “On this special day, know that I am walking beside you always” or “I am with you in Spirit. Love.”
  • A moment of silence in the ceremony to honor the memory of the parent.
  • Have someone read the parent’s favorite passage of scripture, fiction, poetry, or letter.
  • Instead of the Father/Daughter or Groom/Mother dance have a grandfather, brother, uncle, or best friend.

Whether you are the one getting married after a death or supporting someone who is, we hope some of our ideas will help.
