Getting Married in Connecticut? Here’s What You Need To Know

The marriage license is an important part of the process of getting married. It indicates to the officiant that the two parties may legally marry.

In order to get married in Connecticut, both parties must be over 18.  Both must apply and appear in person with a government issued photo identification at the town or city office responsible for Marriage Licenses where the ceremony will take place.

Same-sex marriages are legal in Connecticut.

The application process takes approximately 15 minutes depending on the time of year and town or city office.

The Marriage License fee is thirty dollars ($30.00 cash is best) and is valid for 65 days. There is no waiting period or blood test required.

Typical information required:
  • Date and Location of the Marriage
  • Name and contact information of your wedding officiant
  • Full Legal Name, address, and telephone number for the bride and groom
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Parents’ names and places of birth (including mothers’ maiden names)
Second Marriages

If this is a second marriage your divorce must be final in the state where granted. Divorce papers are not required. The couple must raise their right hand and swear that everything they wrote on the application is true. If your name has changed, you will need a certified copy of your divorce decree.

The officiant who performs the marriage is responsible for filling out (in black ink) the time and place of the marriage on the license and returning it to the Town Clerk where the marriage took place.

You can request a copy of the completed Marriage License from the Town Clerk’s office by mail or in person. The cost is $10. For an application form, go to the Connecticut Department of Health website.

If you plan to use your married name at work, be sure to have your name changed in Social Security records. This way, you will get credit for all your earnings. It’s easy and it’s absolutely free. Contact any Social Security office. You will need documentary evidence showing both your old name and your new name.

FINAL NOTE:

This is for informational purposes only.  As with any other laws, marriage laws can change so we advise you to check with the state, county, city, or town clerk for the most up to date information.
