If you’re a newly engaged couple trying to choose your photographer and the amount of time to book with them, you might be asking yourself if you should go with a first look or not.
When the couples I work with are planning their weddings, generally, I try not to have opinions on how they want to do things. After all, it’s their day and it should be representative of who they are.
Incorporating a first look is something I do have an opinion on. However, some couples feel very strongly about wanting to save that first glimpse for the ceremony and I will never pressure anyone to change their mind if that’s them.
But, if you’re on the fence and need some help deciding which way is the best for you, here is my number one reason you should go with a First Look for the photography on your wedding day.
1. De-Stress Your Wedding Day
A wedding day is actually very stressful for all involved. Actually, it’s a long day with a lot of moving pieces and no matter how well organized you are things can fall behind schedule.
Adding in the time for a first look is like adding in a contingency plan so that the things after the first look can still be on time. Plus, trying to put couple photos, family photos and wedding party photos into the 1-hour cocktail hour is a lot. It can be done, but it goes really fast and can feel mechanical and stiff as a result of the pace.
Doing some of the portraits before the ceremony means you can relax and enjoy part of cocktail hour with your guests, and your couple’s portraits will be done when all the hair and make-up is still fresh.
Splitting your wedding photos into two different portrait sessions also gives you more time to relax and take a breath on your wedding day, and it gives you an opportunity to add in a second or third location with new scenery.
