DJ Sam: Whether you are into romantic classics, upbeat party hits, or custom Spotify or iTunes playlists, these questions will help you uncover if your DJ fits your celebration.

DJ Sal: Who will be your actual DJ at your wedding? Can you talk to the person before you book them?

DJ Sam: Will your DJ act as MC and make all of the announcements?

DJ Sal: What is their style? Laid back or high energy?

DJ Sam: What does your DJ do to get people dancing?

DJ Sal: When do you meet to go over details before the wedding?

DJ Sam: Most importantly, does your DJ have liability insurance?

When your DJ feels like a true partner in your wedding vision, your guests will remember the celebration, not just for the moments, but for how the music made them feel. Let’s explain and get ready to take notes of those important questions you need to ask your wedding [00:03:00] DJ before booking them.

DJ Sal: But first, thanks to Olivia and Tom, who are getting married in 2027, for checking us out on Spotify. You can get a special shout-out by going to YouTube or wherever you listen to your favorite podcast and subscribe to the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast with Sal and Sam. Again, thanks, Olivia and Tom, for being the newest listeners on the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast.

DJ Sam: Ask these essential questions to ensure your DJ knows how to match your style, handle unexpected situations, and keep your guests dancing all night long.

DJ Sal: One of the first questions you should be asking is how will your DJ handle requests from your guests? A great DJ knows how to balance your preferences with the energy of the room.

DJ Sam: That kind of leads into another important question is will they work off a Spotify playlist? Some couples already have their vision or their vibe [00:04:00] already laid out in a playlist. Sometimes iTunes, sometimes Spotify, or just on a piece of paper, a professional DJ should know how to use the Spotify, the iTunes, the list as a guide and not just ignore it.

DJ Sal: Also, it is very important. Does the DJ accept a “No Play List”? That question matters for many reasons. You don’t wanna have anything that you are not particularly a fan of being played at your wedding. So, make sure they have a “No Play List”.

DJ Sam: And what happens if you request something that the DJ doesn’t have? I know in this day and age that might sound impossible, but there, you know, some DJs don’t have every song ever recorded. That question and the answer will tell you a lot about how the DJ is prepared and how much effort they’ll put into making your night personalized.

DJ Sal: Another big thing is backup planning. What do they do in an emergency, and do they have a backup DJ or a complete [00:05:00] backup system? That kind of preparation can save your wedding from unnecessary stress.

DJ Sam: That is so true, Sal. So true. You also want to know who the “Actual DJ” will be. Because sometimes you’re gonna contact a big DJ company that has 20 or 30 different DJs. Can you talk to them before booking? That’s important. It’s your money. You should be able to pick and choose who you want. That question matters because you want to feel comfortable with the person who’s running the music, the timeline, and the announcements.

DJ Sal: And ask who you’ll be going over details with. Will it be the DJ or will it be with the salesperson? It’s always better when communication is direct and clear, especially as your wedding gets closer.

With my company, you actually get to meet the DJ from the get-go. The opening meeting actually happens with the DJ that’s available for your wedding. This is important because how are you gonna [00:06:00] know how you feel about the DJ? How are you gonna learn their style?

People could talk to you about things, but it doesn’t end up being true, and the only way to find out is by talking to the DJ directly at all times.

Even your [00:07:00] pet’s collars match at least two pairs of your pants. It’s only natural that your wedding would showcase your unique touch. DJ Sam: And now it’s Wedding Tip Wednesday time.

But first, marriage is an attempt to solve problems together, which you didn’t even have when you are on your own. And love is accepting that your spouse will spend three hours in the store and come out with one thing!

DJ Sal: On [00:08:00] today’s Wedding Tip Wednesday, Use A Dummy Cake. A question to ask your baker, “Hey, can you make sheet cake for us so that it could be cut up in the back and in the kitchen for later on?” And then have this perfect cake that’s in front where everyone’s getting to see. But guess what? Most of it’s fake. It’s styrofoam. And then the top layer could be an actual cake that you cut, and you feed each other. No one is none the wiser that you have a fake cake in front of you and it saves a lot of money by doing it this way.

DJ Sam: and that’s another wedding tip from Sal and Sam.

Vanessa: And now back to the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast.

DJ Sam: Thanks for staying with us. We’re in the middle of our discussion about essential questions that will help you uncover the right DJ who fits you and your celebration. I’m Sam from Atmosphere Productions.

DJ Sal: I am Sal from After Hours Events of New England.

An incredibly important question is finding out about experience. Experience counts so much. You wanna make sure [00:09:00] you have the right DJ for your wedding, and I gotta tell you, there’s differences between DJs. A club DJ is not the same as a wedding DJ. Radio, again, not the same. So you need to make sure these are people who have experience in doing weddings, and you wanna find out how many weddings they do a year.

DJ Sam: And that’s a very valid concern. Also, while you’re on that question, ask whether they’ll act as emcee and make announcements. That’s very important. There’s been many times where a couple’s hired a DJ and that DJ only plays the music. They don’t make announcements, so it’s not an unusual question to ask. “Will the DJ make announcements as well as emcee the whole event?” A polished DJ will keep the evening flowing smoothly, from introductions, to toasts, to First Dance right through to the Last Dance.

DJ Sal: So, something else that’s very important. Style matters, everyone! You need to know are they laid back, are they high energy or something just in between. And what do they [00:10:00] do if no one’s on the dance floor? A seasoned wedding professional knows how to read the crowd and bring people back to the floor.

DJ Sam: Logistics is also important. Ask when you’ll meet to go over the details. You know, is it a month before? Is it two weeks before? What they’ll wear, are they gonna wear jeans and a t-shirt, a tuxedo, or just black formal? What their gear looks like. Yes! Have the DJ show you a picture of what their set-up looks like?

DJ Sal: You need to ask a very important question. Are there gonna be banners or signs from the DJ in front of their booth or around them? It’s important that you know this answer because you may not want that, and you wanna make sure it’s clear that that’s not going to happen.

Now, let’s get onto the business side of things. How do they handle payments such as a retainer or a final payment? Do they accept credit cards, Venmo, or PayPal? What’s included, and what are their start and end times?

DJ Sam: And also ask about insurance. [00:11:00] Are they insured? Because many venues require liability insurance. That’s important because you do not want to be, as the host, responsible for any damages that your vendors may cause to the facility. Remember, you can buy wedding insurance, also, that protects you on this as well. So, insurance is very important.

And confirm whether they’ll bring a complete backup system. If a computer goes down, do they have a backup or do they have to run home or to the office to get another one? That’s what you need to make sure that they’re having it on-site.

Is lighting included? Such as dance floor lighting or uplighting that goes around the room, or string lighting if you’re in a barn or an outdoor. All of these things that you might assume are included, you must ask specifically.

DJ Sal: Finally, you need to ask a very important question. Do they use an online signature for contracts?

The contract is so very important, so you need to [00:12:00] know how things are gonna be handled with that. Like for my company, we use e-signature. So it goes out to them in email, and they are able to e-sign, and there’s a whole approval system, uh, in that e-signature that will make it binding, and you should make sure you get a copy of that contract later with everyone who’s supposed to have signed. Also, what’s important in a contract does it lay out how the payment structure is. What the dates are, that something is due. Make sure you do get everything in writing, so you are sure you’re getting what you’re supposed to do, and that the DJ understands what they’re supposed to be giving you.

DJ Sam: So there you have it. Your DJ does much more than just play music. They help create the atmosphere, the flow, and the memories your guests will talk about for years.

DJ Sal: So ask the questions now before you book. That way, you are not just hiring a DJ, you’re choosing a professional who understands your wedding vision and helps [00:13:00] bring it to life.

DJ Sam: If you didn’t get chance to take notes of all the questions, please listen to this edition again, and jot down the essential questions you need to ask your wedding DJ.
