DJ Sam: It’s our 200th edition, and it’s time to reflect on what we’ve learned and experienced on this journey with the top three editions.
DJ Sal: Let’s start with edition number #135, Planning Your Dream Wedding Without The Stress: How To Book Vendors Online, with guest Heidi Hanson.
DJ Sam: We’ll also take a listen to edition #43, Mother-Son Wedding Dances with our special guest, Toni Becker.
DJ Sal: And lastly, edition # 177. Avoid Wedding Day Drama: Essential Officiant Questions You Need To Ask.
DJ Sam: So after 200 [00:02:00] editions, what actually makes a wedding stress-free? Let’s take a listen and help you on your wedding planning journey.
DJ Sal: But first, congratulations to Wendy and JJ, who are getting married a year from now in Portland, Connecticut. During a phone call, they said how much the podcast has helped them plan their wedding. We really appreciate it. Go to YouTube and subscribe to the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast with Sal and Sam. Thanks again, Wendy and JJ, for listening to the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast.
DJ Sam: Our first look back goes to edition #177. Avoid Wedding Day Drama. Essential Officiant Questions You Need To Ask. Your ceremony is often the very first experience your family and friends have at your wedding. It sets the tone for everything that follows. That’s why choosing the right officiant and asking the right questions matters so much.
In this edition, we talked about how thoughtful ceremony planning can be to prevent [00:03:00] unnecessary stress, avoid wedding drama, and create a meaningful, smooth start to your celebration. It’s packed with advice couples often don’t realize they need until it’s too late. Let’s take a listen, and at the end, we’ve got some special advice from Sal.
DJ Sal: The officiant is standing between you and the first kiss as a married couple, and if you think, “oh, they just read a few lines and pronounce us marriage,” well, buckle up. There’s a lot more to it.
DJ Sam: Absolutely. A good officiant sets the tone for the entire ceremony. A bad one, though, let’s just say you’ll be talking about that awkward moment forever. And not in a good way.
DJ Sal: And yeah, no one wants the officiant who forgot the couple’s name story.
DJ Sam: Oh, they don’t. So today, we’re sharing the essential questions you need to ask your wedding officiant to avoid any wedding day drama.
DJ Sal: So let’s get the ball [00:04:00] rolling. Question number one, and this is a big one. What is your ceremony style?
DJ Sam: Every officiant has a vibe. Some formal, some traditional. Others are funny and lighthearted. Some are spiritual, while others completely secular; you want to ensure their tone aligns with your personality and the desired mood for your ceremony.
DJ Sal: I always tell couples that your officiant is like the DJ for your ceremony.
They control the energy, the flow, and the emotion. If you want something heartfelt and personal, and your officiant shows up sounding like they’re reading a tax form. It’s not a great start.
DJ Sam: That’s totally true. So now, so what is your style?
DJ Sal: So I, I built the style over the last 17 years that I’ve been doing this again.
I’ve done hundreds of weddings, and I like to be the funny, lighthearted person. I’m not a comedian in any way, but I like to keep it fun and relaxed so everyone’s having a great time.
DJ Sam: [00:05:00] If you are trying to vet your officiant, get some examples, or even the script, or even a video of them actually doing a wedding.
Next up, can we customize our ceremony? This is a huge one. Everyone. You’d be surprised how many couples assume they could change things around and then find out later that the officiant only does one kind of ceremony.
Oh man. That’s right. I’ve seen this happen. Now, Sal, you customize ceremonies for your clients. Tell us a little bit about that.
DJ Sal: So, you know, customization, I think, is very important. You need to make everything unique to you. Let it be about you. So I will actually show them a number of different ceremony scripts and say, “Look, you’re not gonna like a single one of them as a whole, but you’re gonna like bits and pieces”.
So let’s take those bits and pieces and create a new one. Or even do a Google search. Find other wording that you like, and we’ll make it work for you and always tell a love story that really adds to everything.
DJ Sam: It’s great that you do it the way that you do it, so you can personalize it for everyone.
Another [00:06:00] question, which some people might think be, may be a little bit boring, but is critical, is are you legally authorized to officiate in your State? Isn’t that crucial, Sal?
DJ Sal: Absolutely. You know, a lot of people just assume that because someone officiates weddings that they could legally do it in the state that they’re in.
Uh, a lot of people are now ordained ministers, and not every state recognizes that, and you have to go through extra hoops to make sure you could legally marry someone in that particular State. You really need to find out all the information. If you’re dealing with a justice of the peace and you’re getting married in Connecticut, the justice of the peace has to be one from Connecticut, not from another State, because other state J.P.s cannot do the job in Connecticut.
DJ Sam: Yeah! Nothing says romance like realizing you’re not legally married while you’re on your honeymoon in Aruba.
DJ Sal: Yeah! That’s. That’s so true. So true.
DJ Sam: And now here’s that update for 2026 that I mentioned that Sal’s going to explain.
Thank you, Sam. In that edition, we talked [00:07:00] about legalities of weddings, and one of the most important legalities is getting your license so you can be legally married. Well, here’s a little thing that you need to know about the licensing in Connecticut. It’s a new 2026 update. That is. It used to be you paid $50, got your license, you also got a certified copy of your certificate.
DJ Sal: Uh, now it’s $50, and you have to pay an extra $20 to get your certificate, so that’s very important. You need to know that you probably should purchase an extra two certificates altogether. Bringing it to $90 because you’re gonna be sharing this with your insurance and other things, also. When it comes to, uh, getting your license fixed and getting your social security card, you’re just gonna show the license to them. ‘Cause you do that in person, and they’ll just make a copy. You may have to relinquish your certificate when you are changing health insurance. So, have two copies altogether, that is a safety net. [00:08:00] It’s gonna bring it to $90 altogether. And of course, if you don’t live close to the town of which you got married, you could actually pay an extra $20, and they will send you your certificates in the mail. Also, town halls are sending a copy of the certificate to your hometown town hall, so it’s always there too.
Vanessa: This Stress-Free Wedding Planning podcast with Sal and Sam. A podcast for engaged couples, concerned about wedding planning and family expectations, but who wanna have a stress-free, fun, and unforgettable wedding.
DJ Sal: Our next edition is one of the most listened to.
DJ Sam: Yes, it is Sal. This edition features songwriter and vocalist Toni Becker introducing her Mother-Son wedding dance song. “Dance With Me, Baby.” Becker, a mom of two sons, wrote the song after her boys left for college and she began imagining their future weddings. Finding that existing song options didn’t express what she felt about the bittersweet transition. Let’s take a listen.
DJ Sal: By the time this [00:09:00] edition is over, we’ll give you many suggestions. Plus, you’ll hear a brand new song from Toni Becker called “Dance With Me, Baby”, that you’ll certainly want to use for your Mother-Son Dance.
Toni Becker: Hi, I am Toni Becker, and I’m the writer and vocalist of my new song for the Mother-Son Wedding Dance. It’s called “Dance With Me Baby”, and I’ll tell you all about it next.
DJ Sam: Our guest today is a songwriter. Her name is Toni Becker, and she’s created what I consider one of the best Mother-Son wedding dance songs. But I’ll let her explain.
DJ Sal: Hi Toni. Tell us how you came up with the song. “Dance With Me, Baby.”
Toni Becker: Well, thank you for having me. I am a mom of boys. I have two beautiful sons, Ben and Jack. When they left home for college, it got me thinking about next chapters in our family’s life, and I started thinking about their weddings and just wondering what that would look like. I started thinking about the Mother-Son Dance and what song we might choose to dance that special dance. Which then landed me on the internet, where I became [00:10:00] lost in a sea of choices.
And while there are so many beautiful choices out there, none of the songs really spoke my true heart, and I knew that I needed the perfect song for those two weddings and those dances someday. So, I just bottled up the energy and the emotions that I was feeling just thinking about their weddings, and I wrote my own. I wrote my own song.
DJ Sal: That’s incredible. And I think sometimes the groom doesn’t realize how important this is to the mom. I’ve had many go, “oh my, my mom doesn’t really care”. And I say, “Look, don’t make that decision for her. You definitely need to talk to her, ’cause it may be a lot more important than you really think it is”.
And many times they find out later, wow, that was absolutely correct. It was a big deal to them. So I need to take this more seriously.
Toni Becker: Yes, in my opinion, I think that moms are struggling. Well, I think a lot of people are struggling on that special day with a tsunami of emotion. And for moms, we brought them to this day. We have so much we wanna [00:11:00] say, yet it’s difficult to be that vulnerable because we want to mark that momentous occasion. The transition, the leaving and cleaving, the beautiful, the bittersweet, and the letting go. And I think that “Dance With Me Baby” helps to make that moment happen.
DJ Sam: Well, one of the, the things I really enjoyed about the song is the lyrics and I’m, I’m just gonna read one of the lyrics that I fell in love with.
It says, “Time flies. Now here you stand. Looking at you takes my breath away. From the moment your life began to this strong and handsome man on your wedding day.”
Toni Becker: Come over here and take my hand.
Let me take a long, long look at you.
Let me breathe in all I can.
Let the memories pour like sand.
It’s just me and [00:12:00] you.
Time flies now, here you stand.
Looking at you takes my breath away.
From the moment your life began,
To this strong and handsome man.
On your wedding day.
DJ Sam: Those lyrics kind of encapsulate everything that a groom should really be looking for when he’s dancing with his mom.
Toni Becker: Like you said, it’s harder for guys, I think, to wonder if that’s the right move for them to have that dance because they wanna be strong and they don’t wanna be a weeping mess on the dance floor.
You know? I think that that might be an issue, but I think that if they push past that and that they allow that special vignette with their mother, they won’t regret it because. You know, they need that moment in the scheme of the chaotic, [00:13:00] sometimes chaotic wedding. I think they need that moment of embrace and just remembering.
Remembering all that was, I have a lyric in the song that says “To dance for all that was, and all that’s yet to be.”
DJ Sam: Oh, that’s beautiful. Why don’t we take a little listen to that and get inspired?
Toni Becker: “Oh, Dance With Me, Baby.
Let me hold you in these arms.
That used to pick you up,
And dust you off.
And hide you from the storm.
This letting go is beautiful
And bittersweet.
So let’s dance for all that was.
And all that’s yet to be,
Dance with me, baby. Dance with me.”
DJ Sal: Something I would like to bring up in my own personal experience in my own [00:14:00] wedding was my mom was not that emotional person. She wasn’t that dancer. So she was really had no problem with not having a Mother-Son Dance at all. But I did surprise her on the day of the wedding, and uh, she was introduced out to the dance floor, and then she realized we’re about to have that Mother-Son dance moment.
And after that dance was over; it was emotional for both of us. And um, and as, yeah, she realized how important that really was to her after it was all said and done. And how important was for both of us, actually.
DJ Sam: That’s a touching story, Sal. Really brings the emotion to what that dance is really all about.
Toni Becker: Truly beautiful. That’s a beautiful story.
DJ Sal: Thank you.
DJ Sam: Toni, tell us a little bit more about your background. I’m sure you didn’t suddenly wake up one morning and become a songwriter.
Toni Becker: I have always played music or been in a band. I’m a solo performer. I’ve written songs all my life. These days, like the [00:15:00] band thing is over, but I still continue to write.
You know? Now I just enjoy creating songs that are meaningful to specific situations. I’ve written a song about reunions, and I’d written a song for my baby sister when she got married two days before her wedding, and I surprised her with it. Singing it at her wedding. So I just love that part of it, being a musician, and I love how the “Dance With Me Baby” turned out because it just does give you that three and a half minutes where a mom and her son can dance and reflect on all that, led them to that moment, and a spirit of warmth and love and respect and just gratitude. It’s an important few minutes, I think.
DJ Sam: Well, Toni, how do you get a copy of this song? I’m sure our listeners are now eager to get a copy. Do you have some social media, some links that we can get to?
Toni Becker: Yes, they can go to the website. It’s at Dance With Me Baby dot Wedding, and there they can listen to video [00:16:00] clips of the song.
They can read the lyrics, and then if they choose, they can purchase the song from there. And then I have a Facebook page that’s fun and interactive. People post their videos and their pictures of the weddings and their dance to “Dance With Me Baby.” It’s very exciting, and they can get there by typing in “DanceWithMeBabyWeddingSong” on Facebook.
DJ Sam: Oh, that’s great. And we encourage everybody to make a purchase of this song directly from that website. Obviously, Toni has the copyright for that, and we definitely encourage you purchasing it so that obviously the writer gets the compensation that is due. Thank you very much for coming along and speaking with us today, Toni.
Toni Becker: Thank you so much for having me. It’s been a pleasure.
DJ Sal: Pleasure was ours. Toni. Thank you so much.
Toni Becker: “Dance With Me, Baby”

DJ Sam: In this, the final flashback, edition #135. Planning Your Dream Wedding Without The Stress. How To Book Wedding Vendors Online with our special guest, Heidi Hanson. She offers valuable tips for booking wedding vendors online.
We learned that couples need to be straightforward [00:19:00] in their initial communications and not use terms like “cheap” and “budget-friendly”, which can deter quality vendors. Let’s take a listen again.
DJ Sal: Today’s edition is all about Planning Your Dream Wedding Without The Stress. How To Book Wedding Vendors Online. Talented wedding professionals will help transform your wedding vision into a reality, ensuring every detail aligns perfectly on your special day. However, effective communication is key to nurturing these relationships and making the planning process enjoyable.
With our practical advice at your fingertips, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the world of wedding planning and transform vendor interactions for simple transactions into meaningful partnerships. Now we’d like to welcome our special guest, Heidi.
Heidi: Hi, I am Heidi from Heidi Hanson Photography, specializing in weddings, couples, and boudoir photography, serving New England and beyond. You can find me at www dot Heidi Hanson Photography dot com.
DJ Sam: Welcome, Heidi. [00:20:00] We thank you again for joining us. Heidi is an old friend of our podcast. Let’s dive deep and ask you one of the most important questions. What are some essential tips for clients to connect with wedding vendors that’ll help make their planning process so much easier?
Heidi: So the best tip I can give you is to be as direct and honest as possible. What’s your date? Where’s your venue? What’s your budget? All those little details will really help you get that first impression with your potential wedding vendors.
DJ Sam: So first impression is very important, then.
Heidi: Absolutely. It sets the tone for the re the beginning of the relationship and how you wanna proceed.
DJ Sal: You know, a lot of couples sabotage what they’re trying to accomplish by using certain words they shouldn’t say, or certain phrases. Let’s talk about those words and phrases. What should they stay away from, Heidi?
Heidi: I would definitely stay away from “doesn’t cost an arm and a leg”. It’s a little offensive when we get requests like that [00:21:00] because this, this is our livelihood, this is our full-time job.
We know what it takes to run a business. The, the cost of insurance, equipment, all those things that a couple may not even consider when they’re asking these types of questions to vendors.
DJ Sal: Yeah, I absolutely agree with you. There’s a lot of couples out there who do not know the expense of doing business and going with someone who is really in business and not someone who’s just like a bedroom DJ or someone who’s doing photography on the side just to have fun.
There’s so many costs there. We know about ’em, they don’t. Yeah, they easily fall into that trap. So, is there any other key words that we should be staying away from?
Heidi: I would definitely avoid “cheap” and “cheap, but quality”. Or “doesn’t break the bank”. Those, again, those are all things that your vendors don’t wanna hear right off the bat.
DJ Sam: It is, uh, crazy that, uh, couples doing the research for their wedding. The first thing that they want is something that is “cheap”, and we all know that the cheapest thing is not [00:22:00] necessarily the best. Do you want a cheap wedding, or do you want the best wedding? Most couples are gonna say they want the best wedding.
So, why in your communications are you looking for the “cheap”? Everybody’s on a budget, so the wording, budget-friendly doesn’t mean anything. Because what is Sal’s budget is different from what Heidi’s budget is, and is different from what my budget is. Those phrases are some of the phrases that will make me, as a vendor, run the other direction.
I don’t even wanna reply back to a client who sends me an email with any of those words in.
Heidi: Absolutely. And, and the bottom line is you, you get what you pay for. So if you’re not willing to spend the money, it’s gonna show on your wedding day.
DJ Sal: So there you have it. Thank you for being part of the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast journey. Your support and, listening and watching means a lot to us. A special thanks to our sponsors in helping us share these important [00:23:00] editions with you.
