DJ Sal: Today we’re flipping the script and talking directly to wedding guests. Because what you do matters more than you think. [00:02:00] Here’s what you need to know.
DJ Sam: Most wedding blunders aren’t dramatic. They’re small, unintentional mistakes. Things like being late, ignoring the plan, or not knowing basic etiquette can quietly disrupt the day.
DJ Sal: Good intentions don’t always equal good timing. Even well-meaning guests can create stress without meaning to.
DJ Sam: Being a great wedding guest is simple. It comes down to awareness, respect, and trusting the couple’s plan.
DJ Sal: When the guests get it right, couples get to truly enjoy their wedding day.
DJ Sam: That’s what this edition is all about.
DJ Sal: But first I like to give a shout out and thanks to Cheyenne and Stefan, whom I just recently met with, and they told me about a few of the editions they listened to on Spotify. Want to get a shout out? Go to your favorite podcast app, subscribe and leave a comment or review.

DJ Sal: Planning a wedding can take months and couples usually aim for a smooth stress-free day. However, unexpected stress can sometimes pop up often due to small mistakes from guests. When guests are attentive and aware, it allows couples to truly relax, enjoy their special moments, and fully appreciate their wedding day. So here’s 10 Tips For Guests To Get It Right.
Sarah: TIP number 1: RSVP… AND MEAN IT!
DJ Sam:esponse. If you say “yes”, then show up. If you say “no”, that’s okay, but be honest. Couples are paying per person. Changing your mind at the last minute affects [00:04:00] seating, food, and the couples budget. Yes! They still have to pay for the people that don’t show up. Your RSVP isn’t a suggestion. It’s a commitment.
DJ Sal: So look, I wanna make a very important point if you did it. RSVP, I beg you. Don’t just show up. This could cause absolute havoc at the wedding. So much stress for the couple that’s not needed, and adding a bill that they now have to take care of, and didn’t expect.
DJ Sam: Also, if you did RSVP, “yes”, and realize you’re not gonna be able to make it. Let the couple know as far ahead in advance as possible. By doing so, you may save them some money.
Sarah: TIP Number 2: ARRIVE ON TIME (OR A LITTLE EARLY)
DJ Sal: This one’s huge, especially for ceremonies. Late arrivals don’t just interrupt the moment they distract everyone. Aim to arrive at [00:05:00] least 15 to 20 minutes early, so you’re seated, settled, and silent when it starts.
DJ Sam: And if the ceremony has already started when you get there, it might be a good idea not to enter the space. This moment is for the couple, not for you, trying to push your way down to the front row and get seated. Please be respectful.
Sarah: TIP Number 3: DRESS APPROPRIATELY
DJ Sal: You need to follow that dress code. It says formal. Don’t show up in jeans. It says beachy. Maybe skip the stilettos. And one universal rule. Don’t wear white unless the couple specifically says it’s okay.
DJ Sam: I just have to say a little bit more. Not only should you not wear jeans, at all, but also no flashy sneakers. Sneakers are not for weddings. Work boots. Why would you wear work boots to a social event? T-shirts. Enough said about that. Sports caps or really colorful clothes. No ripped [00:06:00] or dirty clothing. No ripped jeans.
Again, why are you wearing jeans? Oh. And let’s not forget about shorts. Here’s another one, ladies. It’s not appropriate to wear revealing dresses or clothing. This is not your event. You don’t wanna upstage the bride. Please keep in mind. That it’s not your day. You should stay out of the spotlight. Bottom line, just be respectful.
DJ Sal: That magic word again.
Sarah: TIP Number 4: UNPLUG DURING THE CEREMONY
DJ Sal: This one comes straight from all photographers and videographers that we’ve worked with. If the ceremony’s unplugged, put your phone away. Professional photos last forever. Your shaky phone video probably won’t. Let me share a story with you. I once had an aunt of the bride jump up in the middle of the aisle and took a picture with her iPhone. And right behind her was our photographer tapping her on the shoulder, thanking her for [00:07:00] messing up his picture. She was like, “don’t worry about it.” Well, that picture turned out to be more important than she realized because it was the “first kiss” and now our photographer didn’t get that, and now they gotta fake it later, and this is something the couple will always remember, and it’s just not a good fit. Please just stay in your lane and stay seated and keep your phones and cameras away.
DJ Sam: What a horrible story, Sal. Besides the fact that your phone and your camera could end up in the professional’s pictures or videos and can’t be deleted, you may be blocking the view of somebody who’s trying to just see the special moment of the ceremony.
Sarah: TIP Number 5: DON’T CHANGE SEATS OR TABLES
DJ Sam: Your escort card or seating card exists for a reason. It helps with food service flow and keeping your families comfortable. Switching around escort cards and seats creates confusion and sometimes hurt feelings. It didn’t take the couple of few minutes to create these seating charts. [00:08:00] It took hours. There are so many considerations when creating the seating chart. Just trust the process. The couple honored you by inviting you. Everything is strategic. Don’t mess with it. You probably think you’re not hurting anything, but in reality you are creating stress for the couple and other guests.

Vanessa: And now back to the Stress-Free Wedding Planning Podcast.
DJ Sal: Thanks for staying with us. We’ve already explained five out of the 10 Tips For Wedding Guests To Get Right. I’m Sal from After Hours Events of New England
DJ Sam: I’m Sam from Atmosphere Productions.
Sarah: TIP Number 6: DON’T MAKE IT ABOUT YOU
DJ Sam: Weddings are emotional, but remember whose day it is. It’s not the time to announce your engagement, your pregnancy, or your relationship drama. Celebrate their love, please. Your moment will come later.
DJ Sal: Yes. Remember, it’s not your time to have your moment. It’s the couple’s big day. Allow them to bask in their spotlight. Allow them to live out their vision. You’ll get [00:11:00] your chance on another day.
Sarah: TIP Number 7: BE RESPECTFUL TO VENDORS
DJ Sam: Vendors are working hard behind the scenes. They’re not your personal assistance, and they’re there to follow the couple’s plan. A little kindness goes a long way.
DJ Sal: The photographer. Has a specific shot list created with the couple. Please avoid requesting additional group photos or directing the photographer so everything stays on schedule. When in doubt, remember the couple has carefully planned the day. Respecting their choices helps everyone enjoy the celebration.
Sarah: TIP Number 8: DON’T REQUEST SONGS THAT THE COUPLE SAID “NO” or “DO NOT PLAY”
DJ Sam: Now this one hits close to home. If a song’s on the “do not playlist”, it’s there for a reason. Trust the DJ. Trust the couple, they’re your friends after all, or family members. Dance the night away. Please enjoy stuff. Stop bothering the DJ and go and have some fun.
DJ Sal: [00:12:00] Now you’re not gonna find out that something is on the “do not playlist” until you reach the DJ. This is a respect thing everyone. The couple puts certain songs on that “no list”, for a purpose. Please respect their wishes. In fact, it’s not your wedding. Don’t request songs.
Sarah: TIP Number 9: WATCH THE ALCOHOL
DJ Sam: Open bar doesn’t mean to go hog wild and overdo it. Know your limits. Nobody wants to be remembered as “that guest”.
DJ Sal: All I can say is hydrate, eat and pace yourself.
Sarah: and TIP Number 10: SAY THANK YOU
DJ Sam: A simple thank you goes a long way. Thank the couple’s parents. Thank the vendors, if you interact with them. Gratitude makes the whole day better for just about everyone.
DJ Sal: Now you may have noticed we didn’t mention saying “thank you” to the couple, and that was intentional. Of course, your thanks are appreciated, just not during the wedding. This is their time to [00:13:00] celebrate and enjoy every moment. If everyone stopped to say “thank you” and “goodbye”, the couple would miss out on so much of their day.
The best way to share your thanks is with a text, an email, or phone call, after they return from their honeymoon. Let them know you wanted to respect their time and allow them to fully enjoy their celebration.
DJ Sam: Yes, I know this might go against all your sensibilities to say “thank you” on the day, but they’re right. If you can wave and say bye, that’s fine, but do not stop them and stop the whole party to say “goodbye”.
DJ Sal: So there you have it, 10 easy ways wedding guests can help keep the day stress-free. When guests get it right, couples can relax, enjoy the moment, and actually soak in their wedding day.
DJ Sam: At the end of the day, weddings run best when everyone respects the plan, the couple put in place and trusts the professionals they hired. Those simple choices help keep the energy high, the timeline smooth, [00:14:00] and the focus exactly where it should be: on celebrating love.
