Planning a honeymoon trip? Big changes are coming for American travelers heading abroad – especially to the United Kingdom and Europe.
If you’re planning a honeymoon trip, there’s a new document you’ll need in addition to your passport: a digital travel authorization.
New UK Entry Rule: The ETA
Starting January 8, 2025, US citizens (along with Canadians, Australians, and New Zealanders) must have an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter or even transit through the United Kingdom.
This applies whether you’re visiting for tourism, business, or short-term study for up to six months. The ETA is not a visa, but a digital pre-clearance linked to your passport, similar to the US ESTA system
Applying is simple: use the official UK government website or the UK ETA app. Most applications are processed within hours, but it can take up to three days—sometimes longer—so apply well before your departure
The ETA costs £16 (about $20) and is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
If you have dual UK citizenship or already hold a UK visa, you don’t need to apply for an ETA.
Europe’s Turn: ETIAS Coming in 2026
While you don’t need special authorization for most of Europe yet, that’s about to change. In mid-to-late 2026, the European Union will launch the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).
Americans will need to apply online for ETIAS before traveling to any Schengen Area country. Like the UK ETA, ETIAS will be digitally linked to your passport and valid for three years (or until your passport expires.
Planning a Honeymoon Trip? Here’s What To Do
- Check your passport: Make sure it’s valid for the duration of your trip.
- Apply early: Don’t wait until the last minute for your ETA or, in the future, ETIAS.
- Use official channels: Only apply through the UK government’s website or app to avoid extra fees or scams
- Keep your documents handy: Your travel authorization is digital, but keep your confirmation email for reference.
